First, lets look at my personality type per the test I took at the following link... http://www.teamtechnology.co.uk/mmdi/questionnaire/. I found out that I go between the following two personality types, ENFJ and ESFJ. This means that I seek to promote personal growth in myself and others. I see people for their potential and seek to find harmony in relationships. I also like cooperation and I am a good team player. I recognize people for their contributions and encourage others to be their best. I like to find and point out common ground in people to help them get along. This was the conclusion after I answered the question favoring toward one personality type or a balance between them. I answered more towards being an extrovert, liking action and saying my ideas as they come to me. I was a balance between sensing and intuition, favoring the idea of possibilities. I very much favored using feeling by being subjective and value driven. Last, I am balanced between judgement and perception. I like to have a plan, but then go with the flow. I enjoyed taking this questionnaire and agree with the results for the most part. I have been raised with taking and knowing all of the different personality tests out there, so I feel like I have a good understanding of my tendencies. I am a cloud that looks good in winter colors :). I am random, easy going, full of ideas, and a ray of sunshine. Out of the four elements of the Earth I most relate to air.
Now that we know about me, how does this affect my relationships with students? I am able to get to know and connect with students quickly and easily. They are comfortable sharing ideas with me and know that I will be understanding and helpful when they make mistakes. I picked a good profession for myself, because I want to see students grow throughout the year. I also want students to get along with myself and one another. Then why isn't it always sunshine and rainbows in my classroom? I think this is because sometimes students and my personalities are tested in times of deadlines and frustration. We forget our true nature and try to be what we are not. For example, I may have the problem of students becoming too chatty in my classroom and I notice that the teacher next to us doesn't have that problem because she is using a certain management style. So, I try using the same management style in my classroom and it doesn't work. It doesn't work because it is not authentic to my personality and nature. I don't like managing that way and my students are wondering what happened to their teacher. I need to trust that students are learning and students need to be able to trust me to be there for them.
I am thankful for this assignment to look at my personality type and to reflect on how it affects my students. It has reminded me to be true to me for the sake of my students and my mindset. It has also reminded me that I need to be aware of and sensitive to my students personalities. My fun loving bubbly personality may be too much for a sensitive reflective student, so I need to make our classroom a place where we can all feel comfortable. This can be done by differentiating assignments, personal contact, and even sitting arrangements by personality types of students and myself. #silvasciencesquad
