All About Me
Hello! My name is Heather Sayre-Silva and I teach 7th grade science at Alpine Vista Elementary School in Tulare, CA. My path to becoming an educator is an unconventional one, however I love that my life has led me to teaching science to middle school students. I come from a long line of educators. Both of my grandmothers were educators, along with my mother. Teaching is in our blood I guess, so it isn't surprising that 3 out of 9 children went into teaching. It was not my plan to become a teacher. I mean who wants to become their mother? Just kidding, love you mom!
After graduating high school I went to college to be an accountant. Then one day I realized I was going to sit in an office all day, how boring. So, I changed my major to agriculture business. Agriculture meant I would be outside riding tractors right? Once I was almost finished with my bachelors degree I realized I was going to sit in an office all day. My family didn't own land or a farm for me to work on, so I would be in an office. How boring. So I left college, got married and started my family. After staying home for 10 years and the birth of our 3rd daughter we decided I should enroll back in school and start substitute teaching to help bring in funds for our family. That is how I became an educator. Once I was done with my degree and enjoyed being a substitute teacher I decided I might as well keep going. I went on to get my multiple subject credential and started teaching. I started in 3rd grade then after 1 year moved to 4th grade for 1 year. Then I moved school sites and went to 1st grade for 2 years. After that the opportunity to team teach 6th grade was presented to me and I jumped on it. It allowed me to focus on teaching just social studies and science and I loved it. Things are always changing in education and that opportunity went away after 2 years. We decided that staying with one teachers was what was best for our 6th graders. That led to the chance to teach 7th grade science. I took it and have enjoyed every minute of it. I'm hoping to stop my pattern of movement and that teaching science is my forever home. Only time will tell. 😀
Now that I am an educator my passion for it is strong and my philosophy of teaching is to empower students to be curious, explore, and make connections that will help them explain their world and solve it's problems. I also am passionate in helping students to grow as humans. I try hard to help students see their worth and potential in this world as they find their voice. #silvasciencesquad
